Have you ever done row after row in stocking stich, (one row plain and one row purl) only to look at your work and find that it has curled up into a long sausage?
Try adding a border of four or five stitches of either knit every row or k1 p1 this can solve the problem.
You could knit the four stitches then put the yarn forward then knit the next two stiches together. This makes a space.
On the return row knit every stich, including the one you made, normally.
